Bye-Bye Binkies

Just the title of this post makes me so happy!  It was one of those things looming over my head that I knew needed to be conquered but I wasn't so sure I was ready for it. Sleep is such a commodity at our house and I didn't want to do anything that might disrupt that.  But.....

One day, (April 6th to be exact) I decided to leave Mason's binkies in his bed following his afternoon nap.  We went about the rest of our day never seeing or discussing them.  Since he had gone record time without as much as a mention I decided to put him to bed without them (I keep using the plural form as he ALWAYS had one in each hand, one in his mouth and a few strewn around the bed).  He went right to sleep.  "There is no way it could be that easy," I thought.  I slept a bit restlessly as I fully expected him to wake at any time begging for his binkies.  The next morning he woke up a little grumpy and nose running. Yep, he was sick.  Had I forseen this little kink in the plan I would never had taken them away when I did but the first night was down and I was not about to go back.  The second night was by far the saddest.  Russell rocked and sang and rocked and sang and when he finally layed Mason down he just cried and cried.  We listened to him for 10-15 minutes, which doesn't sound like a long time but is SUPER long when your baby is crying and begging for mom, dad and binkie.  That was a tough one.  He finally succumbed but spent most of the night in our bed.

The days were so long and the nights were even longer.  He was coughing and snotting and SO grumpy.  It was hard to know how much of it was sickness and how much of it was the loss of his best friend.  I was feeling really bad for him but I had come too far to give up and start all over.

It took 5-6 days before he quit asking for his binkie.  His phrase, "binkie, blanket, na-night" has been modified to "blanket, na-night".  It has just been in the past few days that he is back to his happy little self.  It even seems like he has grown up a little bit the past few weeks.  His last little piece of real baby-ness is gone.

I feel bad that I didn't give him one last comforting sucking session before the binkies disappeared but I think we are both over it now.  No more retracing our steps when we lose one in the store.  No more searching the house to find at least 1 of the 10 that are supposed to be in his bed.  No more talking around or carrying them through the house.  We are binky free and that is such a great feeling!

Congrats! Stuff like that is so hard to do, but you're so glad when it's all over.

And can I just say I misread the title of this post on my sidebar as "Bye-Bye Bikinis" and I was wondering when you'd taken up 2 piece swimwear and, if so, why you'd decided to give it up. :-)

You're a strong woman! Braden tells stories that Mason's binki's are in the garbage. We need to get there soon. Oh, me of little faith!

So excited for you! We are working on that same thing. :) It does feel good not running around panicked because you cant find one.

On Top of the World

I have never been a runner. I have grown up around runners. My dad has run 7 or 8 marathons. My mom has run 2. My husband ran one 7 years ago. I have always cheered from the sidelines and wondered why in the world anyone would EVER do something like that. It is just plain ridiculous. In my quest to get rid of the after math of 2 pregnancies in a years time I decided to step my workouts up a bit. I am a really good walker. I would much rather walk 4 miles than run 1 but I needed to burn more calories. So, running it was. I decided if I mostly walked with some intermittent running that would help. I started out running the downhill portions of my 2 mile loop. Pretty soon I would walk my 2 miles, put Mason down for a nap and run a few loops in the park. About a month ago, Russell challenged me to run the full 2 miles. He pushed the baby stroller while we ran. I was not very conversational , but I did it! I was so proud of myself. I incorporated that 2 mile run into my wor...

Family Pictures

These are the photos that lovingly adorn my entry way welcoming the world to our home. Stockton was 3, Douglas was 7 and Russell and I were somewhat younger than we are now. For pretty obvious reasons it was time to get a new picture on the wall.  I REALLY hate the whole process of family stress  pictures.  Everyone needs recent haircuts, clothes need to be clean and somewhat matching.  A location needs to be chosen, a poor sucker has to accompany us to snap the shots, no runny noses or cold sores can be present, Mason must be happy, Stockton must be agreeable and Douglas and Russell must be supportive.  So, over the weekend I forced my family to humor me and get this HUGE feat over with.  I am pretty happy with the results. Of course, for every good shot there are about 10 not so good ones!  You try and make a toddler hold still and smile nice! My nephew, Jordan, asked his mom why I got to be in charge.  I told him i...

Arizona

Our love of baseball has taken us on some of our coolest family vacations.  Last week, Douglas' team played in the Triple Crown Spring Training tournament.  We decided to cash in our sky miles so all of us could go cheer him on.  A toddler on my lap for a 2 hour flight was a little more enticing than enduring a 12 hour roadtrip, each way.  Douglas wasn't too sad that he missed the team travel in a 16 passenger van.  Can you imagine it?  8 teenage boys...together...lauging....texting...stinking.  No thanks!  His coaches are saints! As seems to always be the case, travel day was hectic.  Watching our family go through airport security must be somewhat entertaining.  There are the Ipods, the belts, the shoes, the stroller, the laptop, the portable DVD player, the camera, the sippy cup, the blanket....followed by the howls of a little boy who got his fingers pinched when the stroller collapsed on him as we tried to contain him to...
