A Lot of Halloween

For some reason, Halloween seemed like a week long holiday this year!  There were many activities to participate in but first let's get to the costume!

Mason kind of waffled.  He thought he wanted to be a zombie.  He wasn't super solid on that plan and about a week before Halloween he decided to be Alfalfa from The Little Rascals.  There is a 1950's version of the show and then a remake in 1994.  It's been on Netflix as well so pretty much everyone knows who Alfalfa is.  That is important when coming up with a costume.  I think he looks just like him!

The neighborhood trunk or treat is a great way to get a bunch of candy quick but mom makes you wear a costume!  Mason went for the easiest thing he could find and went with Harry Potter.  I just got a new IphoneX and wanted to try out the portrait mode.  Can you tell that Mason is thrilled?

We caught the Ward Spooktacular party at the stake property.  Donut on a string is always a hit.  I let Mason ditch the costume for this party!
I love that Mason edited this picture without me knowing.  He decided to add his own commentary:) . That dude happens to be his friend Lincoln's dad, Derek Peterson.  He is also Mason's primary teacher and Jr. Jazz coach.  He is a cool dude!

One more party before the actual event...the Legacy Retirement Center party with Grandma.  Sometimes it's a little rough to be the very youngest grandchild.  It's our responsibility to show up to as many of the grandchildren events as we can.  Mason wasn't thrilled but he did it.  Hopefully, Grandma had fun and knows we love her!  It was fun to watch the older generation recognize Mason from the 1950's version of the show.  They probably didn't even know about the 90's Alfalfa that Mason grew up with!

Everyone meets in a large gathering room.  The kids parade around the room in age groups.

Slumped shoulders, disgusted look on his face...Mason is thrilled to be there.

Another "I can't believe you are making me do this" pose!  I noticed the teenager girl right behind Mason is saying the same thing:).
School parties are still my thing! I love being there with my kids in the classroom having fun.  This year I planned a Murder Mystery activity (very similar to the game of Clue).  It was full classroom participation and took about 45 minutes.  Some of the kids got bored and some of them enjoyed it.  It's always a risk to move away from the traditional party games.  One thing that never disappoints, nachos!

My mom started this tradition when I was a kid and I am happy to continue it.  Who doesn't love nachos?  I also decided 5th graders were old enough for canned soda so we did that as well.  Only one more elementary Halloween left for this school party mom.  It's a little sad to think about.
It totally looks like a nice sunny day but the temperature for the school parade at 9:00 am was 22 degrees.  Luckily, Russell and I timed our sighting just right!  We didn't have to wait for all of the younger grades to come through and we could make a quick exit because it was COLD!

The actual night of Halloween trick or treating event consisted of a new costume (because Mason was tired of his day time one), a pillow case and a great friend, Ethan.  Since Mason has a watch where I can see where he is at on GPS and I can call him we felt comfortable letting him go out on his own.  I warned him of big kids that might steal his candy and pleaded with him to watch for cars and stay out of the road.  I was relieved when he made it home safe and sound.  Sometimes this mom worries a little too much:).

All in all, Halloween was a hit.  I think we will do it again next year!

On Top of the World

I have never been a runner. I have grown up around runners. My dad has run 7 or 8 marathons. My mom has run 2. My husband ran one 7 years ago. I have always cheered from the sidelines and wondered why in the world anyone would EVER do something like that. It is just plain ridiculous. In my quest to get rid of the after math of 2 pregnancies in a years time I decided to step my workouts up a bit. I am a really good walker. I would much rather walk 4 miles than run 1 but I needed to burn more calories. So, running it was. I decided if I mostly walked with some intermittent running that would help. I started out running the downhill portions of my 2 mile loop. Pretty soon I would walk my 2 miles, put Mason down for a nap and run a few loops in the park. About a month ago, Russell challenged me to run the full 2 miles. He pushed the baby stroller while we ran. I was not very conversational , but I did it! I was so proud of myself. I incorporated that 2 mile run into my wor...

Old Enough For the Temple!

Mason and I have been looking forward to going to the temple for a long time.  It is one of my favorite places and there is nothing better than going with your kids.  Mason was ordained a Deacon on January 5th and received his temple recommend  so he could do baptisms and confirmations. We checked Mason out of school a little early on January 9th and went before lunch. We wanted to be together as a family so we invited Douglas and Daisha, Amelia and Grandma Orchard.  That made it special.  It was snowing when we came out so Grandma insisted on staying under the awning.  She didn't even know she was photo bombing! 😂 And to make it even more special, we took family names.  A temple sealer told me to think about families and bringing families to the temple.  I had never thought of that.  I always just grabbed whatever names were next in my card file but we purposefully put together 2 different families to baptize that da...

Arizona

Our love of baseball has taken us on some of our coolest family vacations.  Last week, Douglas' team played in the Triple Crown Spring Training tournament.  We decided to cash in our sky miles so all of us could go cheer him on.  A toddler on my lap for a 2 hour flight was a little more enticing than enduring a 12 hour roadtrip, each way.  Douglas wasn't too sad that he missed the team travel in a 16 passenger van.  Can you imagine it?  8 teenage boys...together...lauging....texting...stinking.  No thanks!  His coaches are saints! As seems to always be the case, travel day was hectic.  Watching our family go through airport security must be somewhat entertaining.  There are the Ipods, the belts, the shoes, the stroller, the laptop, the portable DVD player, the camera, the sippy cup, the blanket....followed by the howls of a little boy who got his fingers pinched when the stroller collapsed on him as we tried to contain him to...
