20 Years

Today marks 20 years since since Russell left on his mission. Since I was his girlfriend at the time he left I also have many memories and emotions that come back to me as I think about that day.  He had already turned in his papers before we started dating so the decision was already made for him to go.  We got really close in the few months before he left and it was really hard to separate for those 2 years.  We both knew that we would end up together forever.  It was more of a "wait and date" situation than a "wait" (I was only 16!) but things worked out in the end.

Russell was called to serve in the Denver, Colorado Mission.  There was some initial disappointment when he opened his call.  Afterall, Denver is almost like getting called to Idaho! Once he got there it ended up being the best mission ever.  Serving a mission is such a tough thing.  Russell wrote in his journal on Sept. 28, 1988,  "Right now it is my first day in the MTC and I am really homesick but I know through the Lord's help I will be okay."  It takes so much faith to leave the comforts of home and dedicate your life to serving the Lord for 2 years.  A mission is really a life shaping experience.

I have had many impressions by the spirit over the last few years that my greatest responsibility as a mother right now is to prepare my boys to serve missions.  Everytime I read the story of the Stripling Warriors in the Book of Mormon I am inspired to teach my boys about God and his Son, about making good choices, about faith, about service and about God's plan for them.   It is such a tough world we live in right now and our kids need to be strong and decide early in life that they are going to choose the Lord's side. How grateful I am that my boy's dad set the example for them to serve our Heavenly Father.  I was so in love with the man you see in that picture and I am so completely in love with the man he is today.

We are SO OLD! It will be 20 years in Nov since Forrest and I started dating. Crazy. Although he didn't rob the cradle quite as effectively as Russ did . . . we still had a couple more years until his mission :-).

And those pictures of little Mason are so darling. What a cute baby.

Hi Jenny! I'm so glad you found me I didn't know you were a blogger too! Don't tell Stockton that I let him beat me...oh and it was really close. He is so fast!!! Jacob says he's the fastest kid at school. He nearly killed me. Regarding your post I remember a couple a years ago Russ was saying how he totally lucked out in getting you. You just never really know a person and what you're gonna get when you get married, especially so young. Anyway, I had to agree with him you are pretty dang spectacular.

See ya around!

On Top of the World

I have never been a runner. I have grown up around runners. My dad has run 7 or 8 marathons. My mom has run 2. My husband ran one 7 years ago. I have always cheered from the sidelines and wondered why in the world anyone would EVER do something like that. It is just plain ridiculous. In my quest to get rid of the after math of 2 pregnancies in a years time I decided to step my workouts up a bit. I am a really good walker. I would much rather walk 4 miles than run 1 but I needed to burn more calories. So, running it was. I decided if I mostly walked with some intermittent running that would help. I started out running the downhill portions of my 2 mile loop. Pretty soon I would walk my 2 miles, put Mason down for a nap and run a few loops in the park. About a month ago, Russell challenged me to run the full 2 miles. He pushed the baby stroller while we ran. I was not very conversational , but I did it! I was so proud of myself. I incorporated that 2 mile run into my wor...

Family Pictures

These are the photos that lovingly adorn my entry way welcoming the world to our home. Stockton was 3, Douglas was 7 and Russell and I were somewhat younger than we are now. For pretty obvious reasons it was time to get a new picture on the wall.  I REALLY hate the whole process of family stress  pictures.  Everyone needs recent haircuts, clothes need to be clean and somewhat matching.  A location needs to be chosen, a poor sucker has to accompany us to snap the shots, no runny noses or cold sores can be present, Mason must be happy, Stockton must be agreeable and Douglas and Russell must be supportive.  So, over the weekend I forced my family to humor me and get this HUGE feat over with.  I am pretty happy with the results. Of course, for every good shot there are about 10 not so good ones!  You try and make a toddler hold still and smile nice! My nephew, Jordan, asked his mom why I got to be in charge.  I told him i...

Arizona

Our love of baseball has taken us on some of our coolest family vacations.  Last week, Douglas' team played in the Triple Crown Spring Training tournament.  We decided to cash in our sky miles so all of us could go cheer him on.  A toddler on my lap for a 2 hour flight was a little more enticing than enduring a 12 hour roadtrip, each way.  Douglas wasn't too sad that he missed the team travel in a 16 passenger van.  Can you imagine it?  8 teenage boys...together...lauging....texting...stinking.  No thanks!  His coaches are saints! As seems to always be the case, travel day was hectic.  Watching our family go through airport security must be somewhat entertaining.  There are the Ipods, the belts, the shoes, the stroller, the laptop, the portable DVD player, the camera, the sippy cup, the blanket....followed by the howls of a little boy who got his fingers pinched when the stroller collapsed on him as we tried to contain him to...
