Out With the Old, In With the Used

Last Friday the lease ended on our beloved Acura.  We have LOVED this car and I would recommend one to anyone.  As I drove it back to the dealer I was a little sentimental thinking about the great memories we made with this car.  The first one that came to mind was when Douglas was at a tournament in St. George while we were on a business trip in San Francisco. We were going nuts not being there.  We got phone updates from his Grandpa each time he got up to bat and the team won all 4 of their pool play games.  They were playing for the championship on Monday.  We arrived home on Sunday, picked Stockton up from his Grandma and headed to St. George.  It was our first road trip in our new car.  We lost the first game we played on Monday (some thought we were bad luck) but we didn't regret the trip one bit.  It is SO hard to be away from Douglas while he is playing ball.

This picture was taken just before we hit the road for Steamboat later that same year (2006). This was our second trip there but first one in the "black car".
Then there are multiple days spent eating lunch in the car, Stockton laying in the back watching movies when he got bored of baseball and hauling the kids and there friends on various outings. One of my most recent memories is driving Mason home from the hospital.  What a special day.

We could have purchased the Acura but we decided it was time to get something bigger.  The boys don't fit quite as well as they used to and with the addition of Mason we have even more gear to pack for our all-day baseball outings.  Bigger was definitely the plan.  We looked at quite a few things and kept our options open.  I completely fell in love with the 2008 Toyota Sequoia.  The seats fold flat on both rows, something we loved in our Acura.  They are roomier than the Acura and I think they are really great looking vehicles.  After test driving one I was sold until I came home to ponder it.  The spirit told me that purchasing a $35,000 vehicle right now was down right ridiculous!  We needed to be a little more realistic in the current economic times, not to mention we are living on a realtors salary right now.  Things have been better!  I immediately felt at peace with the decision to let it go.

We have a great friend who has dedicated his life to car sales.  Since he is currently not selling he referred us to the most wonderful place, CU Auto Sales.  I called Mike and told him what we were thinking and he told me he had the perfect car for us.  He was right.  We drove 2 cars on his lot but knew immediately which one was ours.  Here it is:
our used 2006 Denali.  We haven't bought used for 12 years.  Russell and I had a little joke about 13 years ago as he was just starting to sell.  He would ask his clients to meet him at bus route 45 to go look at houses.  It was a better ride than he could offer in our falling apart Geo Prism.  We vowed then that he would not have to feel like that and picked leasing since he wanted a new car every 3 years.  No need to pay one off if you were only keeping it for a short time.  With another driver in the family in a short 3 years we went for the more practical approach and thought it best to buy-to-keep this time.  We are really happy with our decision. It is the first time we have been without a warranty for a very long time so hopefully the 56,000 miles currently on the car were carefully driven!  Here's to many new memories in our "silver" car:-)!

Congrats! It will take me awhile to realize it is your car when I see you drive down the street.

On Top of the World

I have never been a runner. I have grown up around runners. My dad has run 7 or 8 marathons. My mom has run 2. My husband ran one 7 years ago. I have always cheered from the sidelines and wondered why in the world anyone would EVER do something like that. It is just plain ridiculous. In my quest to get rid of the after math of 2 pregnancies in a years time I decided to step my workouts up a bit. I am a really good walker. I would much rather walk 4 miles than run 1 but I needed to burn more calories. So, running it was. I decided if I mostly walked with some intermittent running that would help. I started out running the downhill portions of my 2 mile loop. Pretty soon I would walk my 2 miles, put Mason down for a nap and run a few loops in the park. About a month ago, Russell challenged me to run the full 2 miles. He pushed the baby stroller while we ran. I was not very conversational , but I did it! I was so proud of myself. I incorporated that 2 mile run into my wor...

Old Enough For the Temple!

Mason and I have been looking forward to going to the temple for a long time.  It is one of my favorite places and there is nothing better than going with your kids.  Mason was ordained a Deacon on January 5th and received his temple recommend  so he could do baptisms and confirmations. We checked Mason out of school a little early on January 9th and went before lunch. We wanted to be together as a family so we invited Douglas and Daisha, Amelia and Grandma Orchard.  That made it special.  It was snowing when we came out so Grandma insisted on staying under the awning.  She didn't even know she was photo bombing! 😂 And to make it even more special, we took family names.  A temple sealer told me to think about families and bringing families to the temple.  I had never thought of that.  I always just grabbed whatever names were next in my card file but we purposefully put together 2 different families to baptize that da...

Arizona

Our love of baseball has taken us on some of our coolest family vacations.  Last week, Douglas' team played in the Triple Crown Spring Training tournament.  We decided to cash in our sky miles so all of us could go cheer him on.  A toddler on my lap for a 2 hour flight was a little more enticing than enduring a 12 hour roadtrip, each way.  Douglas wasn't too sad that he missed the team travel in a 16 passenger van.  Can you imagine it?  8 teenage boys...together...lauging....texting...stinking.  No thanks!  His coaches are saints! As seems to always be the case, travel day was hectic.  Watching our family go through airport security must be somewhat entertaining.  There are the Ipods, the belts, the shoes, the stroller, the laptop, the portable DVD player, the camera, the sippy cup, the blanket....followed by the howls of a little boy who got his fingers pinched when the stroller collapsed on him as we tried to contain him to...
