Grown-Up Birthdays

There is nothing "magical" about being an adult and having a birthday.  I am not one of those that gets sad or depressed because I am getting so old.  I do not count the days down to the dreaded milestones.  I didn't cry when I was 30 and I doubt I will lose sleep over being 40.  But, I do miss the butterflies I used to get when I was a kid.  I miss the anticipation of a party or what surprises my parents had in store.  Then there was the hope that my friends would decorate my locker even though I threatened them if they did.  There was the much anticipated 16th when I got my drivers license and the okay to date.  18 brought with it that no-longer-a-kid title and 21, what's not to love?  I could legally drink and gamble (not much of a perk!) but more importantly, official adulthood.  What exactly does 37 get you?  It's really just another random number.

I have always loved having a spring birthday.  The clothes are cute, the weather is turning, the spring flowers are popping up.  I couldn't think of a better time to celebrate.  The last few years have been a little tricky, however.  With boys that eat-drink-and sleep baseball my birthdays often get a little overshadowed.  The first major tournament of the year usually falls on my birthday.  3 years ago I was able to watch Douglas play 3 games in a row to take the Runner-Up trophy.  I couldn't have asked for a better day (well, 1st place would have been nice). The past 2 years I have been pregnant on my birthday.  That makes it tough to really enjoy birthday shopping.  And, last year Russell took Douglas to baseball, I took Stockton to baseball and then helped myself (with my little Mason-in-utero) to a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger at Wendy's. PATHETIC!  No time to go out, life didn't stop for me and I have to say I was a little bummed.

I refused to have a repeat experience this year.  The day started with Russell ditching his workout so I could do the treadmill, in peace, before he left to work.  While on the treadmill my boys brought me cards with personalized notes inside. What a super impressive husband to think of cards the day before so I could get them first thing in the morning!  My sister accompanied me to Heartland so I could get supplies to make my first ever Mason scrapbook page.  She held Mason while I shopped.  We then went to a nummy lunch at Training Table, #25 Turkey Bacon Swiss sandwich, mayo instead of ranch.  I retreated to my basement where I was able to make one scrapbook page.  I still need to do the journaling but the hard part is done! The boys both had practice again and refusing to cook or eat by myself we took two cars to an early Cafe Rio dinner and went our separate ways for the evening.  I ended the night with American Idol and a Chocolate Fudge ice cream cone from Baskin Robbins.  I also got a raincheck for Tepanyaki which I took advantage of Friday night.  I got lots of phonecalls, thoughtful gifts, and emails and I guess I have come to the conclusion that feeling special and knowing you are thought about on that one day a year is what adult birthdays are all about.  It was a good week.

Growing up, one thing we always looked forward to was that we didn't have to make our beds on our birthday. My mom would come in and do it for us. To this day I refuse to make my bed on my birthday and the funny thing is I get all excited about it, even though I there are lots of normal days when my bed doesn't get made.

I'm just glad you didn't eat at Wendy's again for your birthday. That would be sad!

I am bummed we didn't tell the Tepanyaki waitress that it was your birthday celebration. Maybe the chef would've thrown you a few extra shrimp. ??

Happy Birthday!! Birthdays as adult can be so normal can't they. I do love the hand-made items ours kids give us though; that is probably one of my favorite things.

On Top of the World

I have never been a runner. I have grown up around runners. My dad has run 7 or 8 marathons. My mom has run 2. My husband ran one 7 years ago. I have always cheered from the sidelines and wondered why in the world anyone would EVER do something like that. It is just plain ridiculous. In my quest to get rid of the after math of 2 pregnancies in a years time I decided to step my workouts up a bit. I am a really good walker. I would much rather walk 4 miles than run 1 but I needed to burn more calories. So, running it was. I decided if I mostly walked with some intermittent running that would help. I started out running the downhill portions of my 2 mile loop. Pretty soon I would walk my 2 miles, put Mason down for a nap and run a few loops in the park. About a month ago, Russell challenged me to run the full 2 miles. He pushed the baby stroller while we ran. I was not very conversational , but I did it! I was so proud of myself. I incorporated that 2 mile run into my wor...

Old Enough For the Temple!

Mason and I have been looking forward to going to the temple for a long time.  It is one of my favorite places and there is nothing better than going with your kids.  Mason was ordained a Deacon on January 5th and received his temple recommend  so he could do baptisms and confirmations. We checked Mason out of school a little early on January 9th and went before lunch. We wanted to be together as a family so we invited Douglas and Daisha, Amelia and Grandma Orchard.  That made it special.  It was snowing when we came out so Grandma insisted on staying under the awning.  She didn't even know she was photo bombing! 😂 And to make it even more special, we took family names.  A temple sealer told me to think about families and bringing families to the temple.  I had never thought of that.  I always just grabbed whatever names were next in my card file but we purposefully put together 2 different families to baptize that da...

Arizona

Our love of baseball has taken us on some of our coolest family vacations.  Last week, Douglas' team played in the Triple Crown Spring Training tournament.  We decided to cash in our sky miles so all of us could go cheer him on.  A toddler on my lap for a 2 hour flight was a little more enticing than enduring a 12 hour roadtrip, each way.  Douglas wasn't too sad that he missed the team travel in a 16 passenger van.  Can you imagine it?  8 teenage boys...together...lauging....texting...stinking.  No thanks!  His coaches are saints! As seems to always be the case, travel day was hectic.  Watching our family go through airport security must be somewhat entertaining.  There are the Ipods, the belts, the shoes, the stroller, the laptop, the portable DVD player, the camera, the sippy cup, the blanket....followed by the howls of a little boy who got his fingers pinched when the stroller collapsed on him as we tried to contain him to...
