A Mom Thing or a Me Thing?

We are 4 days out from leaving on our much anticipated trip to Mexico and the anxiety is starting to set in.  I am not a huge fan of flying.  I cringe as we take off.  That first huge turn always gets me and then I settle once I am in the air at a nice cruising altitude.  Upon landing, I hold my breath when we touch down and breathe a huge sigh of relief when the plane slows to a nice leisurely taxi to the destination gate.  I thoroughly enjoy myself while I am gone and then go through the process all over again for the return flight home.  (Did I mention we always end up with some really stupid movie on our flights?  Not really the point but worth mentioning nonetheless.)  I REALLY hate flying anywhere without my kids.  It is that fear of something happening and them being left orphans with only 25 possible extended family members to care for them.  I KNOW they would be fine but I want to be the mom.  I want to watch them grow.  I want to finish what I started.

This is the first time I have left Mason.  Sure, we've gone to dinner without him a few times (very few!) and left him on a few other occasions but I have never been a night without him in his 9 little months. This, I am afraid, is going to make that flying anxiety even worse!  Is this normal?  Do other mom's feel this way or is it just me?  I know statistically planes are the safest way to travel.  I know people do it everyday.  I know that leaving my kids for 4 short nights makes me a better mom for the next year.  I know being alone with my husband makes him even more of the love-of-my-life than he already is.  My brain gets all that, it is my heart that has a hard time leaving them behind.Y

I second everything you just said! I had to take medication last time I flew, I HATE IT (and I was with my kids)!! And to think that I grew up with a mom who was a travel agent, we went all over the world!!

It is so hard to leave the kids, the only time I have was this summer for 2 days at girls camp, GOOD LUCK! I wish I was going!!!

Sounds like you are in for some fun in Mexico. When you were little you'r Mom and Dad left you with Steve and I a couple of times, it was fun. I hope the kids have fun and so do you.
I like reading "Mrs. Julia Speaks Her Mind".

You are a normal mom and a normal flier! I tell every one I know, your God's living definition of MOM! I wish could be half the mom you are! Have a wonderful trip!

If you weren't worried and feeling anxious about leaving your kids, especially Mason for the first time I'd worry about you =)

Where you aren't flying regularly (like weekly) of course it will cause some anxiety, that's normal too.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help while you are gone.

I always worry so much when I am leaving my kids, it is especially hard to leave a baby for the first time. You're not alone in how you are feeling! Hope you have a great time!

On Top of the World

I have never been a runner. I have grown up around runners. My dad has run 7 or 8 marathons. My mom has run 2. My husband ran one 7 years ago. I have always cheered from the sidelines and wondered why in the world anyone would EVER do something like that. It is just plain ridiculous. In my quest to get rid of the after math of 2 pregnancies in a years time I decided to step my workouts up a bit. I am a really good walker. I would much rather walk 4 miles than run 1 but I needed to burn more calories. So, running it was. I decided if I mostly walked with some intermittent running that would help. I started out running the downhill portions of my 2 mile loop. Pretty soon I would walk my 2 miles, put Mason down for a nap and run a few loops in the park. About a month ago, Russell challenged me to run the full 2 miles. He pushed the baby stroller while we ran. I was not very conversational , but I did it! I was so proud of myself. I incorporated that 2 mile run into my wor...

Old Enough For the Temple!

Mason and I have been looking forward to going to the temple for a long time.  It is one of my favorite places and there is nothing better than going with your kids.  Mason was ordained a Deacon on January 5th and received his temple recommend  so he could do baptisms and confirmations. We checked Mason out of school a little early on January 9th and went before lunch. We wanted to be together as a family so we invited Douglas and Daisha, Amelia and Grandma Orchard.  That made it special.  It was snowing when we came out so Grandma insisted on staying under the awning.  She didn't even know she was photo bombing! 😂 And to make it even more special, we took family names.  A temple sealer told me to think about families and bringing families to the temple.  I had never thought of that.  I always just grabbed whatever names were next in my card file but we purposefully put together 2 different families to baptize that da...

Arizona

Our love of baseball has taken us on some of our coolest family vacations.  Last week, Douglas' team played in the Triple Crown Spring Training tournament.  We decided to cash in our sky miles so all of us could go cheer him on.  A toddler on my lap for a 2 hour flight was a little more enticing than enduring a 12 hour roadtrip, each way.  Douglas wasn't too sad that he missed the team travel in a 16 passenger van.  Can you imagine it?  8 teenage boys...together...lauging....texting...stinking.  No thanks!  His coaches are saints! As seems to always be the case, travel day was hectic.  Watching our family go through airport security must be somewhat entertaining.  There are the Ipods, the belts, the shoes, the stroller, the laptop, the portable DVD player, the camera, the sippy cup, the blanket....followed by the howls of a little boy who got his fingers pinched when the stroller collapsed on him as we tried to contain him to...
