Sproul Style

We have some Thanksgiving traditions that I would dare say may surprise some of you. The Sproul's have their own way of doing things and they are anything but traditional!
The morning starts at 7:00 am with the guys heading off for rabbit hunting. In years past they have gotten a few rabbits but it seems the last few years have left them high and dry. They still enjoy shooting skeets and riding Uncle Dallas' 4-wheeler.
The women and baby stay home to prepare the food. We each make our dishes at home and meet up for the finishing touches but next year we are going to get together to do the food. We have the traditional turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, yams, fruit salad, homemade rolls, deviled eggs, cranberry sauce, relish tray and the works. We also have a great appetizer of cream cheese, chili sauce, mini shrimp and Ritz crackers.

Mason got a bite of yams. He wasn't so sure about the texure. He really enjoyed his processed sweet potatoes later on!

Emily and Charity made a really cute edible turkey. It was tasty and made a great counter decoration.

Prayer time is set for 2:00 so the bulk of the afternoon can be spent watching the football game. You will never understand how much this is Thanksgiving to us. We don't all sit around the table and converse. We lounge around and yell and scream and cheer! We are huge Dallas Cowboy fans (I do have a brother named Dallas:)) and we love this part. They play every year on Thanksgiving afternoon. 9 years ago Russell and my dad went to the game while the rest of us stayed home. I can't for the life of me remember why I didn't go but I really wish I would have. I have always been a big fan as well. It was a blowout. Yep! The Cowboys won!

There's our man, Tony Romo!

The cousins played and played and played. They all got along really well.

This is another major part of the day. We each had a copy of the ads and spent hours planning our "Black Friday" strategy.

We were surprised by my brother Dave when they called and said they were on their way. We weren't sure if they were in town from Vegas but were glad to see them. We had everyone there for a short time and managed to get this poor quality picture but priceless nonetheless.

The day always ends with mom and dad passing out new Christmas decorations to each family that they purchased together at an after-Christmas sale the previous year. How fun is that?!

And now today I am left pondering what a GREAT week it has been. The sisters shopped the day away yesterday and loved every minute of it. Russell did a great job holding down the fort and managed to clean up the house as well. I was so greatful! We even get a girls afternoon today to go see Twilight.  This morning I took down my entry table decorations and was a little sad as I did so. Fall is officially over and we have entered that dismal season of winter. But soon the table will be adorned with Christmas and there is nothing dismal about that. Aren't the holidays wonderful!

On Top of the World

I have never been a runner. I have grown up around runners. My dad has run 7 or 8 marathons. My mom has run 2. My husband ran one 7 years ago. I have always cheered from the sidelines and wondered why in the world anyone would EVER do something like that. It is just plain ridiculous. In my quest to get rid of the after math of 2 pregnancies in a years time I decided to step my workouts up a bit. I am a really good walker. I would much rather walk 4 miles than run 1 but I needed to burn more calories. So, running it was. I decided if I mostly walked with some intermittent running that would help. I started out running the downhill portions of my 2 mile loop. Pretty soon I would walk my 2 miles, put Mason down for a nap and run a few loops in the park. About a month ago, Russell challenged me to run the full 2 miles. He pushed the baby stroller while we ran. I was not very conversational , but I did it! I was so proud of myself. I incorporated that 2 mile run into my wor...

Old Enough For the Temple!

Mason and I have been looking forward to going to the temple for a long time.  It is one of my favorite places and there is nothing better than going with your kids.  Mason was ordained a Deacon on January 5th and received his temple recommend  so he could do baptisms and confirmations. We checked Mason out of school a little early on January 9th and went before lunch. We wanted to be together as a family so we invited Douglas and Daisha, Amelia and Grandma Orchard.  That made it special.  It was snowing when we came out so Grandma insisted on staying under the awning.  She didn't even know she was photo bombing! 😂 And to make it even more special, we took family names.  A temple sealer told me to think about families and bringing families to the temple.  I had never thought of that.  I always just grabbed whatever names were next in my card file but we purposefully put together 2 different families to baptize that da...

Arizona

Our love of baseball has taken us on some of our coolest family vacations.  Last week, Douglas' team played in the Triple Crown Spring Training tournament.  We decided to cash in our sky miles so all of us could go cheer him on.  A toddler on my lap for a 2 hour flight was a little more enticing than enduring a 12 hour roadtrip, each way.  Douglas wasn't too sad that he missed the team travel in a 16 passenger van.  Can you imagine it?  8 teenage boys...together...lauging....texting...stinking.  No thanks!  His coaches are saints! As seems to always be the case, travel day was hectic.  Watching our family go through airport security must be somewhat entertaining.  There are the Ipods, the belts, the shoes, the stroller, the laptop, the portable DVD player, the camera, the sippy cup, the blanket....followed by the howls of a little boy who got his fingers pinched when the stroller collapsed on him as we tried to contain him to...
